The country also finishes third in Africa, after two island states.

Algeria ranks first in the Maghreb on the Human Development Index (HDI), according to the latest figures from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The HDI is a wider measure than wealth alone. It combines life expectancy, schooling and gross national income per person.

Using 2023 data from the UNDP's Human Development Report 2025, Algeria scores 0.763. It ranks 96th out of 193 countries and territories, in the group with high human development.

Life expectancy at birth reached 76.3 years in 2023, according to the UNDP.

The UNDP estimates expected years of schooling for children entering the Algerian school system at 15.5 years. This is the number of years of study a child can expect if current conditions stay the same.

The mean number of years of schooling for adults is 7.4 years. Algeria is also third in Africa, behind the Seychelles and Mauritius.

According to DNAlgerie, the index does not directly measure unemployment, inequality between regions or the quality of each school or hospital. It also does not capture the daily difficulties faced by households.

The Seychelles scored 0.848 and Mauritius 0.806. Both are island states.
