About El Tarf
The wilaya of El Tarf lies in the far north-east of Algeria, on the Mediterranean coast and the border with Tunisia. Its neighbours include the wilaya of Souk Ahras. Its capital is the town of El Tarf. Its coastal town of El Kala has been a centre of the red coral trade since at least the 10th century. It is wilaya number 36. It has 24 communes in 7 dairas. The wilaya had 408,414 inhabitants at the 2008 census (ONS).
