After 1945, Algerian workers took part in the rebuilding of Marseille. The city became one of the main places where Algerian immigrants settled, with the Paris region, Lyon and Grenoble. An INSEE study published in 2016, with data for 2012, found that more than half of the immigrants born in Algeria lived in the urban areas of Paris, Lyon or Marseille.

Cooperation with Algiers

On 13 May 2024, the wali, or governor, of Algiers and the mayor of Marseille signed a cooperation agreement. It covers urban planning, heritage, the environment and sport.
