Nearly 12 million pupils start the new school year

Schools across Algeria opened on Monday 21 September for the 2026 to 2027 year. Close to 12 million pupils returned to primary, middle and secondary schools.
The Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Sadaoui, opened the school year from Jijel, the wilaya worst hit by the August fires.
About 1.1 million of the pupils are starting school for the first time, according to ABNews. DIA gives 1.3 million new pupils.
Earlier in September the minister rejected rumours of a delay to 4 October. He ordered the repair of schools damaged by fires and bad weather, including 23 in Jijel and 6 in Béjaïa. A cleaning campaign ran in schools from 6 to 17 September, and pupils receive free hygiene products.
