The course follows a framework agreement signed by the two ministries, and participants first sat a level test.
More than 2,100 tourism professionals across Algeria's wilayas start a ten-day English course on 8 November, the Ministry of Tourism and Crafts said.
Algérie Eco reported that the course is run in coordination with the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education. It forms part of a framework agreement between the two ministries.
The course is aimed at tourist guides, who are in direct contact with foreign visitors. It ends on 19 November, with six hours of classes a day.
Before the course, participants sat a placement test from 2 to 5 November at vocational training establishments and centres. The test found that several participants already have an advanced level in English, in speaking and writing, mainly from their work in the field.
The other participants were placed in a beginner or an intermediate group, so that the classes match their knowledge and needs.
Classes will cover tourism vocabulary and phrases. Participants should be able to present historic and archaeological sites, cultural heritage, local traditions, and tourist and craft products.
The ministry wants the course to improve the welcome of foreign visitors and the quality of the services they receive.
The ministry also hopes the course will strengthen Algeria's presence on international tourism markets.
