The deal was signed during an official visit to Germany, while the extra volumes and prices have not been specified.

Sonatrach plans to increase gas deliveries to the German energy group VNG from 1 January 2027, under a deal signed in Berlin on 16 July.

Maghreb Emergent reported that the agreement was signed in Berlin during an official visit to Germany by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The ceremony was attended by Mohamed Arkab, Algerian minister of hydrocarbons, and Frank Wetzel, German state secretary for economy and energy.

VNG, based in Leipzig, began importing Algerian gas directly in 2024. It became the first German importer to buy from Sonatrach.

The two companies have not given the extra volumes, the prices or the length of the new deal.

Ulf Heitmüller, head of VNG, sees several sources of supply as necessary to meet the needs of its customers.

Frank Wetzel presented Algeria as a reliable partner, especially for the energy security of Germany and the European Union.

Sonatrach and VNG also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 17 June covering several energy areas.

The MoU covers projects on green hydrogen and ammonia, and on reducing methane emissions.

Both companies also take part in two initiatives: the Algeria to Europe Hydrogen Alliance (ALTEH2A) and the SoutH2 Corridor. These initiatives aim to develop the infrastructure needed to transport hydrogen between Algeria and Europe.

Germany is seeking to diversify its suppliers and limit the risks linked to its energy dependence.
