Houssem Aouar is a midfielder trained at Olympique Lyonnais who has played for Algeria since 2023. His family comes from Béni Saf, a port in western Algeria. He was born on 30 June 1998 in Lyon.
Aouar grew up in the Tonkin district of Villeurbanne, where he began at AS Tonkin. In 2009, at the age of 11, he joined the Lyon academy.
The young playmaker made his first-team debut in 2017. In 2020 he helped Lyon reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, and that October he played once for France, in a friendly against Ukraine.
Because that match was a friendly, he was still free to change national team. In March 2023 he chose Algeria, and he received his first call-up that June.
In July 2023 he joined AS Roma, in Italy, and a year later he moved to Al-Ittihad, in Saudi Arabia. There he won the Saudi league title in 2025.
At the 2026 World Cup he played in the 3-3 draw with Austria, in which he set up Riyad Mahrez's equaliser. Algeria reached the round of 32, where Switzerland won 2-0.
