Zinedine Zidane is one of the greatest footballers of his generation. As a coach, he won the Champions League 3 years in a row, which no one had done before. He was born on 23 June 1972 in Marseille, in France.
Zidane grew up in La Castellane, a housing estate in the north of Marseille. His parents came from Aguemoune, a village in Kabylia, in the wilaya of Béjaïa, and his father moved to France in 1953.
After starting at Cannes and Bordeaux, the young midfielder joined Juventus and won the Italian league twice. In 2001 he moved to Real Madrid, where he won the Champions League in 2002.
The highlight came in 1998, when he scored twice in the World Cup final and France became world champions. That year he also won the Ballon d'Or, the prize for the best player of the year, and in 2000 France won the European Championship.
As coach of Real Madrid, he won the Champions League in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2026 he became head coach of the France national team.
From Marseille to Kabylia and the great stadiums of Europe, his story is followed closely in Algeria. He remains a model for young players on both sides of the Mediterranean.
