Bir Mourad Raïs

Bir Mourad Raïs is a suburb on the southern side of Algiers. The town takes its name from a well, or bir, that the corsair captain Mourad Rais had dug near his house. In the French period the name became Birmandreis, also written Birmendreis. It gives its name to the Bir Mourad Raïs circonscription administrative, which also groups Birkhadem, Djasr Kasentina, Saoula and Hydra. The commune had 45,345 inhabitants at the 2008 census (ONS).
