Great Mosque of Algiers
The Great Mosque of Algiers, known as Djamaa El Djazaïr, is a very large modern mosque in Mohammadia. Its minaret, 265 m high, is the tallest in the world and also houses a museum of Islamic civilisation and a research centre. Visitors admire the blend of modern architecture and traditional Islamic art, and the calm, clean and well organised spaces.
Djamaa el Djazair, officially inaugurated on 25 February 2024, is the largest mosque in Africa and the third largest in the world. Its minaret, 265 m high, is the tallest in the world, and about 6 km of calligraphy decorate the building. Two German firms, KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten and Krebs und Kiefer, designed the mosque.
China State Construction Engineering Corporation built the complex from 2012 to 2019. Besides the prayer hall of 20,000 square metres, it holds a Museum of Islamic Civilisation and a research centre. Its library can hold one million books, and Dar El Coran, a higher school of Islamic sciences, can take 1,500 students.
