About Great Mosque of Paris

A mosque on Place du Puits de l'Ermite, in the 5th arrondissement, inaugurated on 15 July 1926. Visitors like its peaceful garden and its beautiful courtyard.

Built from 1922 to 1926, the Grande Mosquée de Paris stands at 2 bis place du Puits-de-l'Ermite. It honours the Muslim soldiers who died for France in the First World War.

The premises of the Grande Mosquée de Paris also hold a restaurant, a tea room and a hammam, a traditional steam bath. They have their own entrance at 39 rue Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire.

From 1940 to 1944, during the Second World War, the Grande Mosquée de Paris gave false certificates of Muslim faith to Jewish people. According to the City of Paris, its basements may also have sheltered Jewish children. Among those who issued such certificates was Abdelkader Mesli, an imam who came from Algeria to the Grande Mosquée.
