Its three loading posts can handle 6,400 tonnes a day, with two for lorries and one for trains.

Agriculture Minister Sid Ali Khaldi laid the first stone of a cereal storage silo in Aïn Bouchekif, Tiaret wilaya, on Monday, Algérie 360 reported.

The minister was in Tiaret on a working and inspection visit, accompanied by Wali Abdelwahab Bertima, the governor of Tiaret wilaya. The silo is part of a national programme to add storage, strengthen the cereal sector and improve how harvests are collected and sold.

The silo is designed to hold one million quintals (100,000 tonnes) of grain. It is designed for grain with a density of 0.7 to 0.8 tonne per cubic metre.

How the silo will work

The silo can handle up to 300 tonnes an hour. Its two reception lines can work in parallel, with or without a cleaning option.

It has three loading and dispatch posts: two for lorries and one for rail wagons. Together they have an average daily capacity of 6,400 tonnes.

The plan is for 12 cycles a year, giving a total yearly capacity of 12 million quintals for handling harvests. The silo is designed to work in temperatures from -5°C to 50°C.

What it means for farmers

The silo will help reduce post-harvest losses (grain lost after the harvest), improve marketing and support farmers and local production. The project also fits efforts to modernise farming and food security.

The state aims for self-sufficiency and less dependence on imports, and the project fits these aims.
