Algeria handed over a 40-megawatt power plant it built in Niamey as a gift to Niger. Sonelgaz International built it in about 70 days.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, opened the plant at Gorou Banda on Wednesday 3 June. It uses two 20-megawatt gas turbines and adds about a fifth to Niger's generating capacity, according to Africheck.

Assembly began on 22 April and tests on 9 May. Eight staff of Niger's power company were trained at Sonelgaz schools in Algeria in March. It is Sonelgaz International's first project abroad.

Niger honoured Ghrieb as a Commander of its National Order of Merit. Algeria is also building a polyclinic and dialysis centre and an Islamic institute in Agadez, and a press house in Niamey.
