Algerians in three French departments will use the new office for consular paperwork, by appointment only.

A new Algerian consulate will open in Dammarie-lès-Lys, in Seine-et-Marne, instead of Melun, where it was first planned, and will serve Algerians in three French departments.

ObservAlgerie reported that the French media MesInfos first published the news on 6 November.

The consulate will be housed in a house at 199, avenue Anatole-France. A planning permit for works is displayed on the boundary wall of the property.

The building will first need interior works to house consular services.

No official opening date has been announced.

The project was first announced in October 2022, during a visit to Algeria by the then French Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, on 9 and 10 October. At that time, the consulate was planned for Melun, a town that had already hosted an Algerian consulate between 1983 and 2004.

A presidential decree, No. 23-237 of 3 July 2023, published in Official Journal No. 46 of 9 July 2023, made the decision official. It set the area covered by the consulate as three departments: Seine-et-Marne, Essonne and Yonne.

The office is meant to ease pressure on the Algerian consulate in Créteil, which currently handles part of the paperwork for people in these departments. Consular services are expected to be by appointment only.

Until the new office opens, Algerians living in Seine-et-Marne must continue to use their current consulate, at 9, rue Olof-Palme, in Créteil, in the Val-de-Marne.
