Farming insurance grew fastest, while fire and miscellaneous risks had the biggest fall.

Algeria's insurance sector recorded revenue of 102.8bn dinars (DZD) in the first half of 2026, a rise of 3%, the National Insurance Council (CNA) said.

Algérie Eco reported that damage insurance, which includes motor, farming, transport, fire and credit cover, held 79.6% of the market. Personal insurance accounted for 13%, the council's latest sector note showed.

International acceptances, meaning international reinsurance, made up 6.6% of output and rose 9.4% to 6.7bn dinars (DZD).

Takaful activity recorded 70,127 contracts in the first half of 2026, for total contributions of 876.8m dinars (DZD). General Takaful accounted for 508.6m dinars (DZD) of that and family Takaful for 368.2m dinars (DZD).

Motor and farming lead growth

Damage insurance revenue reached 81.8bn dinars (DZD), up 1.6% from 80.5bn dinars (DZD) on 30 June 2025, an increase of 1.3bn dinars (DZD). The number of policies rose 4.4%, from 4,712,023 to 4,918,050.

The council linked the result to strong growth in motor, farming and transport, which offset falls in fire and credit cover.

Motor insurance was the main driver, with close to 55% of total output. Its revenue rose 12.4%, a gain in premiums of almost 5bn dinars (DZD), and its contracts rose 5.8%.

Farming insurance grew fastest, with revenue up 42.2%, adding 560.3m dinars (DZD). Its number of contracts rose 19.8%.

Transport revenue rose 3.4% to 3.7bn dinars (DZD), and the number of policies grew 2.1%.

Personal insurance revenue reached 13.4bn dinars (DZD), up 5.8%, or 733m dinars (DZD) more than in the same period of 2025. Collective provident insurance made up 48.5% of this and rose 10.2%, adding 600.3m dinars (DZD) in premiums.

Falls in fire and credit

Fire and miscellaneous risks (IRD) recorded the biggest fall, with revenue down 12.4%, from 33.8bn dinars (DZD) to 29.6bn dinars (DZD). Its premiums fell 7.3%.

Credit cover revenue fell 7.3% to 1.8bn dinars (DZD).

Claims paid rise

Maghreb Emergent reported that insurers paid 44.1bn dinars (DZD) in claims, a rise of 22.1%. The number of claims declared rose 10.3%, and the number of claims settled rose 20.5%.

The settlement rate rose 17.3%. Claims still waiting to be settled remained high at 132.8bn dinars (DZD).
