Tlemcen's share of the work is 67bn dinars (DZD), and 105km of pipes are due to be laid over 16 months.

On Monday, the Minister of Water Resources and Hydraulic Security, Lounès Bouzegza, officially launched work in Tlemcen to connect seawater desalination plants to water networks in western Algeria, Algérie 360 reported.

The plants are at Aïn Adjroud in Marsa Ben M'hidi (Tlemcen), Sidi El Adjel in Khadra (Mostaganem) and El Marsa in Chlef. The ministry said the works aim to strengthen drinking water supply in coastal wilayas and several inland areas, and to modernise the public water service.

Tlemcen project

Tlemcen wilaya has been allocated 67bn dinars for the link downstream of the Aïn Adjroud plant. The project includes laying 105km of pipes, split into five lots given to national specialist companies.

The work is set to take 16 months. Once it is complete, drinking water supply to Tlemcen and Sidi Bel Abbès wilayas should improve, the ministry said.

Priority wilayas

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered, at a Council of Ministers meeting on Sunday, that Chlef, Mostaganem and Tlemcen be supplied with desalinated seawater as soon as possible, APS reported.

The three wilayas were described as priority areas. The ministry said the projects follow the President's directives.

Other projects

Sétif wilaya is due to start work on a water transfer from the Tabellout dam in Jijel wilaya to the Drâa Eddis dam. The transfer will benefit 15 communes in the north-east of Sétif wilaya.

In Blida wilaya, the minister is due to inaugurate a water transfer from the Fouka 2 desalination plant in Tipasa wilaya. The link will serve communes in the east of Blida.

Work to supply drinking water to Tin Zaouatine in In Guezzam wilaya was officially launched, Algérie 360 reported. The water will come from the Tanezrouft aquifer in Bordj Badji Mokhtar wilaya, over a distance of 250km.

The programme forms part of commemorations of the 72nd anniversary of the start of the Revolution of Liberation, Algérie 360 reported. The minister's tour covers four wilayas in total, beginning in Tlemcen.
