Oran and Algiers in the world top 50 for mobile internet speed

Oran is 41st and Algiers 42nd in the world for mobile internet speed in Ookla's Speedtest Global Index. It is the first time that two Algerian cities are in the world top 50.
On 6 September 2026 the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications gave the figures of the latest monthly update of Ookla's Speedtest Global Index. Oran is 41st in the world for mobile internet speed, at 197.09 Mbps. It rose 12 places and entered the top 50 for the first time.
Algiers is 42nd, at 194.57 Mbps, one place lower than in the previous update. It is the first time that two Algerian cities are in the world top 50.
Across Algeria, the mobile download speed rose from 40.86 Mbps in July 2025 to 78.36 Mbps in July 2026, about 91 per cent more. The fixed download speed rose from 50.85 Mbps to 90.45 Mbps in the same period, more than 77 per cent more. The ministry linked the rise in fixed speed to the spread of fibre optic networks across the wilayas.
