A single photo of an identity document can be used to copy a person's identity, according to the ministry.

The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPT) has warned citizens against sending photos of personal documents to sellers and commercial pages, saying they could be misused.

According to Awras, the ministry said in an awareness post that one photo of a document can be enough to copy someone's identity. The documents named are the national identity card, the gold card and the passport.

The ministry urged citizens not to send images of official documents to any page or seller. It asked them to check who they are dealing with before they share any personal data.

The warning comes as some dealings still involve leaving personal papers with the other side. In property rental, a customer is asked to leave a national identity card or driving licence with the other party as a guarantee.

The document stays with that party until the deal ends.

The ministry advised against leaving such documents with people who are not authorised to hold them.

For readers, sending a photo of an identity document to an unknown seller or renter carries a risk of fraud. The ministry says they should check the other party before sharing anything.

In the post, the ministry gave three steps: stop, check, and do not become a victim.
