Work starts on a 1,406 MW power plant in Tébessa

Work began on a gas-fired power plant of 1,406 megawatts at El Aouinet in the wilaya of Tébessa. It will be the second-largest power station in Algeria.
Technology and cost
The Minister of Energy, Mourad Adjal, laid the first stone on Monday 27 April with the wali of Tébessa, Ahmed Belhaddad. The plant will use combined-cycle technology, which runs gas turbines and then uses the waste heat to drive steam turbines, saving about 30 per cent of fuel.
It will cost 184.09 billion dinars, about 1.4 billion US dollars, and take 48 months to build. Sonelgaz's generation company will build it with the Chinese firm CNEEC.
Jobs, size and exports
The project is expected to create 1,500 jobs during construction and 500 when running. Only the Bellara plant is larger.
The minister said that, because Tébessa is on the border, Algeria hopes to export some of the power in future. Tunisian media linked this to possible exports to Tunisia.
