Bouteflika's family came from Tlemcen. As a young man he joined the struggle for independence.
In 1963, at only 26, he became Minister of Foreign Affairs, a post he kept until 1979, mostly under President Houari Boumediene. In 1974 he was elected president of the United Nations General Assembly.
2 decades later, in 1999, he was elected president of Algeria, and he was re-elected several times. His years in power saw the end of the violence of the 1990s and laws on national reconciliation.
He left office in April 2019. After his death he was buried at El Alia cemetery. His career linked the generation of independence to the 21st century.
