With his first club, NA Hussein Dey, he won the Algerian Cup in 1979. 3 years later, at the World Cup in Spain, he scored in Algeria's famous 2-1 win over West Germany.
FC Porto then brought him to Portugal, where he won 3 league titles. In the 1987 European Cup final against Bayern Munich, he scored with the back of his heel, and Porto won the cup.
That same year he was named African Footballer of the Year. With Algeria he won the Africa Cup of Nations at home in 1990 and was named best player of the tournament.
In the Arab world and beyond, a backheel goal is still often called a "Madjer".
