Saint Laurent's father ran an insurance company and owned cinemas, and Yves grew up with his 2 younger sisters and went to the Lycée Lamoricière.
In 1954, at 18, the young man left for Paris, and in 1955 he joined the fashion house of Christian Dior. When Dior died in 1957, he took charge of its collections.
With his partner, Pierre Bergé, he then started his own fashion house, and his name became famous around the world. He brought the tuxedo, the trouser suit and the safari jacket into women's fashion.
In 1983 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York gave him an exhibition, the first at the museum for a living designer. France later gave him high honours in the Legion of Honour.
The light and colours of Oran, the city of his childhood, stayed with him, and today the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris shows his work.
