About Tébessa
The wilaya of Tébessa lies in the far north-east of Algeria, on the border with Tunisia. Its neighbours include the wilayas of Souk Ahras, Oum El Bouaghi and Khenchela. Its capital, Tébessa, is the Roman city of Theveste, whose name it keeps in Arabic form. It is wilaya number 12. In 2026 part of it became the wilaya of Bir El Ater. Before that it had 28 communes in 12 dairas, and 648,703 inhabitants at the 2008 census (ONS).
