About Chlef
The wilaya of Chlef lies in the north-west of Algeria, on the Mediterranean coast, between Algiers and Oran. It borders the wilayas of Tipaza, Aïn Defla, Tissemsilt, Relizane and Mostaganem. Its capital is the town of Chlef, once called El Asnam, which took the name of the Chéliff river in 1980. It is wilaya number 02. It has 35 communes in 13 dairas. The wilaya had 1,002,088 inhabitants at the 2008 census (ONS).
