About Laghouat
The wilaya of Laghouat lies in north-central Algeria, where the High Plateaux meet the Sahara. Its neighbours include the wilayas of Djelfa, El Bayadh and Ghardaïa. Its capital is the town of Laghouat, whose name is linked to the saw-toothed mountains around it. It is wilaya number 03. In 2026 part of it became the wilaya of Aflou, and it now has 12 communes. On its earlier boundaries it had 455,602 inhabitants at the 2008 census (ONS).
