Algeria launched remote renewal of biometric passports for its citizens abroad. The service began as a pilot at the Consulate General in Paris.
The Minister of the Interior and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, launched the service on Wednesday 24 June at the Foreign Ministry in Algiers, with Secretary of State Sofiane Chaïb. A video link showed the process at the Paris consulate, and the first passport renewed this way was handed to its holder.
The minister said the service would be extended to other consulates in stages. It should reduce crowding at consulates and spare people long journeys.
