A decree declared the southern sections of the Algiers to Tamanrasset railway to be of public utility. This lets the state acquire about 6,055 hectares of land for 1,086 kilometres of new line.

Decree and land

Executive decree 26-273 of 1 August 2026 appeared in the Official Journal on Thursday 6 August. It covers El Meniaa to In Salah (410 km) and In Salah to Tamanrasset (676 km).

The land is in El Meniaa (1,046 ha), In Salah (2,436 ha) and Tamanrasset (2,572 ha).

Design of the line

Passenger trains will be able to reach 220 km/h and freight trains 100 km/h. The El Meniaa to In Salah section needs 7 tunnels and 13 viaducts, with a station at In Salah. The In Salah to Tamanrasset section needs 26 viaducts and 7 stations.

The line will use ERTMS level 1 signalling. The full line is about 2,000 kilometres long, and the government wants it in service by the end of 2028.
