Algeria drew 3 to 3 with Austria in their last World Cup group match. The result took both teams into the knockout round, with Algeria as one of the best third-placed teams.
The match was played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Algeria's goals came from Rafik Belghali and Riyad Mahrez, who scored twice, the second in the third minute of added time.
Many Algerians linked the match to the 1982 World Cup, when a result between West Germany and Austria in Gijón knocked Algeria out. Algeria then played Switzerland in Vancouver in the round of 32.
