A government commission cleared the last preparations for the 495-kilometre rail line from Laghouat to El Meniaa through Ghardaïa. Work is due to start in September.

The Minister of Public Works, Abdelkader Djellaoui, chaired the interministerial commission on Monday 31 August. The section is the first part of the planned line from Algiers to Tamanrasset. National companies will build it.

The African Development Bank is part-funding it, with a first loan of 747.32 million euros, and the section is estimated at 2.8 billion US dollars. Public companies will also lead the section from El Meniaa to kilometre point 216 further south.
