About Mers El Kébir
Mers El Kébir lies at the western end of the Gulf of Oran, in a natural harbour at the foot of Mount Santon. Its Arabic name means "the great port". It belongs to the daira, or district, of Aïn El Turk and had 16,970 inhabitants at the 2008 census (ONS). The commune is home to the Mers El Kébir Main Naval Base.
