Palace of the Raïs
The Palace of the Raïs, also called Bastion 23, is a restored Ottoman palace complex on Boulevard Amara Mohamed Rachid, in the Casbah. It serves as an arts and culture centre. Visitors admire its arches and courtyards, the sea views and the rooms on the history of Algiers.
Bastion 23, or the Palais des Rais, grew from a gun battery built at Qa'a Es Sour in 1576 by the naval captain Mami Arnaout. The site now includes three palaces, fishermen's houses, a mosque, covered passages and the battery. Restored from 1987 under UNESCO supervision, it opened as an arts and culture centre on 1 November 1994.
