About Martyrs Memorial
The Martyrs Memorial, or Maqam Echahid, stands 92 m tall on a hill above Algiers in El Madania. It is the best known landmark of the country, with a museum below it. Visitors enjoy the wide view over the city and can ride up by cable car.
The Martyrs' Memorial, Maqam Echahid, was inaugurated on 5 July 1982 for the 20th anniversary of independence. The concrete monument stands on the heights of El Madania and is one of the most visible landmarks of Algiers. The Diar El Mahçoul housing estate lies on the slope just below it.
