Hippo Regius

The ruins of Hippo Regius keep the traces of a forum, a theatre and villas decorated with mosaics. A museum built on the site shows sculptures, pottery and mosaics from the excavations, among them statues from the forum, the baths and the houses.

Since 28 April 2025 the site has been part of "Augustinian Itineraries", a proposal on the UNESCO tentative list of possible World Heritage sites.

The old town

The old town of Annaba has been a safeguarded sector, an area protected for its heritage, since a decree of 6 May 2013. At its top stands the Sidi Bou Merouane mosque, built in 1033 under the Zirid ruler al-Muizz ibn Badis.

The Salah Bey mosque dates from the end of the 18th century and was built by Salah Bey, the bey, or governor, of Constantine.
