Mountains and climate
The Soummam valley separates the Djurdjura mountains, to the west, from the Babor and Biban ranges, to the east. The climate is Mediterranean, with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
The Akfadou forest spreads over thousands of hectares above Chemini and rises above 1,600 m. Mount Gouraya and Cap Carbon shelter Béjaïa and its port, and the town rises like an amphitheatre below the Gouraya ridge.
Gorges and waterfalls
The Kherrata gorges, or Chabet El Akhra, run close to Taskriout, between Kherrata to the south and Darguina to the north. The Oued Agrioun, a river, cut them through the Babor range. The Routard guide calls them the most emblematic site of Kherrata.
Kefrida, a village of Taskriout, has a waterfall that is one of the favourite tourist sites of the region. It draws visitors all year round.
Hot springs
The hot spring of Kiria rises at Acif El Hammam, at the foot of the Akfadou forest, about 20 km from the town of Adekar. Local people have long welcomed bathers at the spring.
The hot spring of Hammam Sillal lies at the village of Sillal, in Tifra, about 75 km from Béjaïa. It sits against a rock between 2 rivers, in a wooded mountain massif.
The coast
Along more than 100 km of coast, rocky coves line the west and beaches of fine golden sand line the east. The coastal communes run from Beni Ksila in the west to Melbou in the east. Tighremt beach lies on the coast of Toudja.
A limestone cave with stalactites, stalagmites and a small lake lies at Aokas, about 25 km from Béjaïa. Workers found it by chance while cutting a road tunnel on the coast road between Béjaïa and Jijel. The headland of Cap Aokas, also called Ras Aokas or Pointe Aokas, stands at the town, on the Gulf of Béjaïa.
Beaches of the east coast
The bathing beaches of the east coast are those of Tichy, Aokas, Souk El Ténine and Melbou. Every summer, visitors from all over the country come to Tichy for its beaches, its sun, its mountain and above all its sea. The resort has several kilometres of beaches.
In July 2026, the newspaper L'Expression described the seafront at Lota, in Souk El Ténine, as a leisure area for families and summer visitors.
