The Turkish steel group Tosyali announced 2.5 billion US dollars of new investment in Algeria. It aims to raise output at its Bethioua complex near Oran from 6.5 million to about 10 million tonnes a year.
The group's chairman, Fuat Tosyali, gave the figure to the Turkish agency Bloomberg HT during a steel trade fair in Düsseldorf in mid-April. The expansion is planned over 30 months.
A new galvanised steel unit is due to open, and from the third quarter of 2026, 700,000 tonnes of flat steel a year will go to car makers in Algeria to raise local content. The plant will also make pipes for oil and gas projects.
The plan relies partly on iron ore from the Gara Djebilet mine. One Algerian source gives a final capacity of 9.5 million tonnes instead of 10 million.
