About Reghaïa Lake Nature Reserve

A coastal lake and marsh at the mouth of the Oued Reghaïa river, in Reghaïa. It is a Ramsar wetland, protected under an international agreement, with more than 200 bird species. The managed reserve receives school groups.

The Lake Reghaïa Nature Reserve has been Ramsar site no. 1304, a wetland of international importance, since 6 April 2003. The lake lies at the mouth of the Reghaïa river, where a sand ridge closes the estuary. Ramsar calls it the only wetland left near Algiers after drainage in the colonial era.

A centre for game and wildlife, the Centre cynégétique de Réghaïa, manages the land part of the reserve. It belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture, runs guided nature walks and has a classroom, a library and lodging for students. Algeria held its national World Wetlands Day event at the reserve on 3 February 2007.

The reserve shelters 55 bird species protected by Algerian law. It also hosts three threatened ducks: the ferruginous duck, the marbled teal and the white headed duck. Migrating birds stop there on their way across the Mediterranean and the Sahara.

The western and southern parts of Lake Reghaïa, a wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention, lie in H'raoua. The rest of the lake lies in Reghaïa, and the main town of H'raoua borders the wetland.
