Birtouta

Birtouta is a town on the Mitidja plain, south of Algiers, at about 52 m above sea level. The name Birtouta means "the well of the mulberry tree" in Arabic. It is the seat of the daira, or district, of Birtouta, which includes Ouled Chebel and Tessala El Merdja. These three communes form the Birtouta circonscription administrative, one of 13 groups created by decree 26-112 of 8 March 2026. Birtouta had 30,575 inhabitants at the 2008 census (ONS).
