About Notre-Dame d'Afrique Basilica

A basilica on a cliff above the Bay of Algiers, on Avenue Ali Ourak in Bologhine, inaugurated in 1872. Visitors admire the beautiful interior and the wide views over the bay and the city. It can be reached by cable car, by bus or by car.

Notre-Dame d'Afrique, a basilica in Romano Byzantine style, stands on a promontory 124 m above the bay of Algiers. Work began in 1858, and the basilica was consecrated in 1872. An inscription in the choir asks Our Lady of Africa to pray "for us and for the Muslims".

Damaged by the 2003 earthquake, the basilica was restored with funds from the city of Algiers, the European Union and donors in Algeria and France. It officially reopened in December 2010.
