About Algiers Observatory, CRAAG

A historic observatory on the Bouzareah hilltop, founded in the late 19th century. It took part in the Carte du Ciel sky map project. Today it is the national research centre for astronomy and earthquake monitoring.

The Algiers Observatory moved to a hilltop at Bouzareah in the late 19th century. Between 1891 and 1911 it made 1,260 photographic plates of the sky for the Carte du Ciel, an international map of the stars. Today the site is the seat of CRAAG, the Centre de Recherche en Astronomie, Astrophysique et Géophysique.

The observatory and the Institute of Physics of the Globe, founded in 1931, merged in 1980. The centre carries out research in astrophysics and geophysics and monitors earthquakes across Algeria.
