Coast and mountains

The coast of the wilaya is about 80 km long, and Annaba rises from the shore up the slopes of the Edough. This coastal massif, covered with cork oaks, reaches 1,008 m.

The Edough newt lives only in the Edough massif, the Guerbes Sendhadja wetlands and the Mekhada marsh.

Climate

Annaba has a Mediterranean climate, with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers, and July is the driest month. The mean annual temperature is about 18°C, and rainfall is about 650 to 690 mm a year.

Rivers and Lake Fetzara

The Oued El Hout, a river, crosses the commune of Eulma and is the main river that feeds Lake Fetzara from the south. The hills of Aïn Berda close the basin of the lake on its southern side. Beyond the border, the town of Nechmaya, in the wilaya of Guelma, lies 8 km away.

Across the plain of El Hadjar, the Meboudja river carries the waters of the Lake Fetzara basin. It joins the Seybouse near the town, about 8 km from the mouth of the Seybouse.

Beaches and capes

Aïn Achir beach lies on the corniche, the seafront road north of the city of Annaba, about 1.25 km south of the Cap de Garde lighthouse. The Routard travel guide names it among the beaches of Annaba that people enjoy for swimming.

Cap de Garde, also called Ras El Hamra, has an active lighthouse north of the port. The lighthouse is a square stone tower attached to the keeper's house.

Chetaïbi is best known for its western bay, the Baie Ouest, where green hills meet blue water. Some call it the most beautiful bay in the country.

Other beaches include Sables d'Or, or golden sands, Fontaine Romaine, Sidi Akkacha and Oued Leghnem. Between them, the rocky coast is cut into small coves known for their sea life.
