About Château Neuf

A large fortress in the old town of Oran, called Rozalcazar by the Spanish and Bordj El Ahmar in Arabic. It grew from a 14th century Merinid fort, and the Spanish built their fortress there after 1509. From 1792 Bey Mohamed El Kebir lived in its palace, and in 1831 the French command made it its headquarters. It is one of the classified forts of old Oran. Part of the old palace houses OGEBC, the national office for protected cultural property.
