ADE and ADC sign water contracts for five desalination plants

The Algerian Water Company (ADE) and the Algerian Desalination Company (ADC) signed water sale and purchase contracts for five desalination plants in Algiers on Thursday.

The signing completes the contract process between the two companies, and aims to link the production of desalinated water more closely with its distribution. ADC is a subsidiary of the Sonatrach group, and it runs the five large seawater desalination plants at El Tarf, Béjaïa, Boumerdès, Tipasa and Oran.

The contracts were signed by the director general of ADE and by the chairmen of the boards of directors of the five plants. The ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Hydrocarbons. It was supervised by the secretary general of that ministry, the secretary general of the Ministry of Finance and the inspector general of the Ministry of Hydraulics.

Officials from the Sonatrach group and ADC, and staff from the sectors concerned, also attended.

Algérie Eco reported, citing APS, that the contracts aim to keep the five plants running regularly and protect public investment. The contracts also aim to ensure the continuity of the public water service.

The plants entered service in early 2025 as part of the second complementary seawater desalination programme, which President Abdelmadjid Tebboune decided. The contracts are part of state efforts to strengthen national water security through closer coordination between the companies that produce and distribute desalinated water.
