Drivers on the 29km Birtouta to Khemis El Khechna road should expect works from November.

Abdelkader Djellaoui, minister of public works and basic infrastructure, has announced road works for 2026 in several wilayas across Algeria.

The ministry said in a statement, reported by Algérie 360, that it aims to improve the road network and connect remote areas.

Works across the country

In Souk Ahras, the first section of the widening of National Road 16 (RN16) has reached the stage of laying the asphalt surface layer.

Work on RN16M in the same wilaya is repairing damaged sections between kilometre points 4+500 and 8+900.

In Skikda, the widening of RN85 between Aïn Bouziane and Sidi Mezghiche, over 14.4km, has reached key stages.

In Guelma, work on lot 06 of the RN20 widening includes laying asphalt and fitting a concrete central divider.

In Batna, a strategic project linking RN88 at the Khenchela border to RN03 has advanced over 56km. Rehabilitation work on 13.5km of RN03 is also under way.

In El M'Ghair, the widening of RN03 between Tendla and Sidi Amrane, via Djamaa, has been officially launched. The 20km project is split into two lots.

In Béjaïa, work continues to modernise the Kherrata tunnels, T2 and T3, on RN09, to improve road safety.

In Oran, the widening of RN108 over 12km will link the East-West motorway directly to the Aïn Témouchent border, easing regional traffic.

In Bouira, the modernisation of CW 93 between Lakhdaria, Maala and Zbarbar, over 20km, is in progress. A priming layer is being applied.

In Ghardaïa, maintenance of the airport runway and its annexes has been completed.

Algiers and heavy lorries

Djellaoui presented the plan to the Council of the Nation, with the aim of ending long traffic jams around Algiers.

Near Algiers, the second southern bypass runs for 62km from Zéralda to Boudouaou, where the Algerian Motorway Company (ADA) carries out daily repairs.

The main focus is the 29km section from Birtouta to Khemis El Khechna, which is the top priority for 2026. Drivers on this road should expect works from November.

Overloaded lorries damage new asphalt, so the government will give gendarmes portable scales to check heavy lorries.

Storm damage and 2027 plans

Severe storms badly damaged roads in the Grand Sud, and 1.413bn dinars (DZD) has been set aside for five strategic sections.

The sections include National Roads 54, 53 and 03, and wilaya road 03.

The 2027 finance law also provides for building wilaya road 02 over 42km, from Oued Samene to Bordj Omar Driss. It also includes a full overhaul of wilaya road 05 at Imehrou.

Detailed studies will be carried out for road access to the Idkak area.

The repair of National Road 54 in Illizi is entering its final stage of contract award.
