USM Alger won the CAF Confederation Cup, Africa's second club competition, after beating Zamalek of Egypt 8 to 7 on penalties. The two legs of the final ended 1 to 1 on aggregate.
Two legs and penalties
USM Alger won the first leg 1 to 0 at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers on Saturday 9 May, with a late goal. In the second leg in Cairo on Saturday 16 May, Zamalek scored from a penalty in the fifth minute and kept the lead to win 1 to 0.
The competition rules allow no extra time, so the final went straight to a penalty shoot-out. Goalkeeper Oussama Benbot made key saves during the match.
A second continental title
The title came two weeks after the club won the Algerian Cup, giving it a cup double. It is USM Alger's second Confederation Cup.
In 2023 the club became the first Algerian winner of the competition, beating Young Africans of Tanzania on away goals. As Confederation Cup winners, USM Alger qualify for the CAF Super Cup.
