More than 100 urology doctors watched the operation from a hotel, while two regional hospitals followed it through a remote teaching link.

Doctors in Algiers performed the first operation of its kind in Algeria for a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate on Friday, using a laser.

Awras reported that the operation took place at the National Security Hospital Bachir Ben Dehiba in Algiers. The surgery was supervised by Fernando Gómez Sancha, a Spanish doctor and one of the best-known developers of the technique worldwide.

The technique, known as HoLEP, uses a holmium laser to remove enlarged tissue through an endoscope, a thin tube with a camera. It is one of the newest surgical methods for this condition.

The tissue is freed and removed in one whole piece.

Doctors from the National Security regional hospitals in Oran and Sidi Bel Abbès followed each stage of the operation directly, through a remote teaching link. They watched the various stages of the intervention as they happened.

More than 100 Algerian urology doctors followed the operation from the Mercure hotel, in coordination with the Algerian Association of Urologists.

The two-day medical meeting is held at the hospital as part of efforts by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) to use international expertise. The meeting takes place at the National Security hospital in Algiers.
